India Blocks Hundreds of Apps and Thousands of Links for National Security

India has blocked 805 applications and 3,266 website links, citing concerns over cyber threats and data breaches and the integrity of India’s digital infrastructure, which has seen rapid growth in recent years.

Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has taken decisive action to block a substantial number of apps and links deemed a threat to national security. He has also emphasized the importance of using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance the detection and prevention of cyber threats. This measure is part of a broader strategy to combat cybercrime and protect sensitive information from malicious actors.

The blocked entities include various applications and websites that were found to be involved in activities detrimental to India’s security interests.

The primary entities involved in this operation are the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and various cybersecurity agencies. The I4C, under the MHA’s guidance, has been instrumental in identifying and blocking these malicious apps and links.

The initiative also involves collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and other financial institutions to detect and shut down mule accounts used by cybercriminals to launder money.

To further mitigate the risks, the authorities are focusing on four key strategies: convergence, coordination, communication, and capacity building. These strategies involve strengthening inter-ministerial and inter-departmental coordination, ensuring seamless communication, and enhancing the capacity of cybersecurity agencies. Public awareness campaigns are also being conducted to educate citizens about cyber threats and promote the use of the I4C helpline number ‘1930’ for reporting cybercrimes.
