Cybercriminals Use Image and Video Attachments to Deliver Malware

Cybercriminals are making use of image and video attachments to deliver malware. This evolving tactic, dubbed “VidSpam,” poses a significant threat to mobile users worldwide.

Hackers have shifted from traditional image-based scams to more sophisticated video-based attacks. Initially, these scams involved eye-catching images promising extraordinary financial returns, often related to Bitcoin investments. In a report by Proofpoint security researchers, hackers are now leveraging small video file attachments, typically lightweight and in formats like “.3gp”, to enhance their deception tactics. These are designed to be easily accessible on mobile devices with limited storage and slower networks.

The videos may display static images rather than moving content, aiming to add credibility rather than visually entice users. Once victims engage, they are often redirected to join WhatsApp groups where scammers use high-pressure tactics to extract money or personal information.

Cyber Security experts and authorities are working to raise awareness and implement protective measures. Users are advised to avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unfamiliar senders and to report suspicious messages using built-in reporting features on iOS and Android devices. Additionally, collaboration across the cybersecurity industry is crucial to stay informed about emerging threats and develop effective countermeasures.
