UnitedHealth Hack Affects 190 Million Americans, Double the Initial Estimate

A massive cyberattack on UnitedHealth’s tech unit disclosed last year, February 2024, has compromised the personal information of millions of Americans, raising serious security concerns. Recently, it has been revealed that 190 million Americans were affected in the breach, making it one of the largest healthcare data breaches in US history.

The attack targeted UnitedHealth’s Change Healthcare unit, which processes a significant portion of the nation’s healthcare transactions. The breach exposed sensitive data, including names, Social Security numbers, and medical records. The Russian-speaking AlphV/BlackCat ransomware group is suspected to be behind the attack, exploiting a vulnerability in remote-access software to gain access. The attack has caused widespread disruption to the U.S. healthcare system, affecting treatment and financial operations.

The company has shut down affected systems, notified impacted individuals, and is working with federal agencies to investigate the breach. Recommendations for affected individuals include monitoring credit reports and being vigilant for signs of identity theft.
