With the alarming surge of cyberattacks over the years towards the healthcare sector, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has proposed significant updates to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Rule to enhance cybersecurity protections for electronic protected health information (ePHI).
In 2023 alone, the healthcare sector experienced a record-breaking 747 large data breaches, with a staggering 606 attributed to hacking. These incidents compromised over 168 million healthcare records.
The proposed updates are designed to strengthen the cybersecurity posture of healthcare organizations and their partners, sensitive data will be better protected from cyber threats.
HHS is actively seeking public input on the proposed rule, aiming to finalize the updates later this year. Healthcare organizations are urged to review these changes and gear up for compliance with the new, robust requirements.
