A ransomware attack on New York Blood Center Enterprises (NYBCe) was identified on January 26, 2025, when suspicious activity was detected on their IT systems. The organization immediately engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to investigate and confirmed that the activity was due to a ransomware incident. To contain the threat, NYBCe took certain systems offline, which significantly disrupted their operations.
The attack had a widespread impact, affecting blood donation services and IT systems across several states. NYBCe, which serves over 600 healthcare facilities and hospitals, faced delays in blood processing and cancellations of donation appointments. This disruption has worsened an already critical blood shortage, as they had recently issued an emergency appeal for donations due to lower-than-usual contributions amid harsh winter conditions.
In response to the attack, NYBCe has been working diligently with cybersecurity experts to restore its systems and resume normal operations. The organization remains in close communication with its hospital partners and donors, implementing workarounds to fulfill orders and maintain essential services. Despite the challenges, NYBCe has expressed gratitude for the support from the blood donation community and emphasized the importance of continued donations to overcome this crisis.
As of now, the specific perpetrators behind the ransomware attack have not been publicly identified. NYBCe is working closely with law enforcement and third-party cybersecurity experts to determine the source of the attack.
